Brittany's Cape Town Internship Review

Biomedical engineering research  Internship In Cape Town, 2019

You guys were always available when I needed you. You would get back to me almost immediately every time I messaged you or called. The orientation was very detailed and realistic. Your info was very real, not sugar-coated in any way, and I appreciated the honesty.

"Phenomenal learning experience!"

Brittany Lemke Review from Go Abroad | August 07, 2019

Before beginning this internship, I had a hard time convincing my parents into letting me go. Lucie made every effort to help me prove what a worthwhile experience my internship would be. After getting the okay from the parentals, Lucie and her company ensured I would be prepared for every situation possible including orientation and walkthroughs of what living in Cape Town would be like.

Upon arrival, Luigi was there every step of the way once I moved into my accommodation. He helped me pick out groceries for the first time and gave orientation (which was extremely realistic, which I appreciated), packets of brochures of what to do around town, a power outlet converter, who to call in emergencies, and much more. I began work the following week, where Luigi took me on the first day.

I was placed as a research intern at UCT as a biomedical engineer. I produced electrospun scaffolds for a doctor at the hospital adjacent to the university. My work was extremely in-depth and allowed me to make long-standing academic connections.

Outside of work, Bridging Gaps hosted socials at the end of the month and every event was entirely different than the last. We went to markets, did an escape room, went to various iconic restaurants, and even more. Also, for any activity that I wanted to do, Bridging Gaps was there to give advice, book it, and give me discounts.

All-in-all, Bridging Gaps has enabled such a tremendous experience in South Africa. Not only have I learned a great deal from my research, but I’ve created memories that will last me a lifetime. Highly recommend!!!

internship placement experience

Biomedical engineering research Internship Placement Experience

What type of internship experience were you initially looking for?

What type of internship experience were you initially looking for?

Definitely research. I wanted it to be in the medical field over anything. Ideally, I wanted it to be in engineering, with a medical base.

How did your actual internship placement compare to your ideal internship experience?

How did your actual internship placement compare to your ideal internship experience?

It ended up being exactly what I needed. The beginning was a bit hectic as I started off in the hospital. But in the second week, I moved to a lab where I was doing exactly what I wanted to be doing.

Did taking part in your internship challenge you and help develop your skills?

Did taking part in your internship challenge you and help develop your skills?

Yes, definitely. My internship was actually quite specific to my major, which is tissue engineering. This opportunity has actually given me a much better idea of what I want to do in the future, and where I want to go and how I want to study going forward.

Overall do you feel that doing this international internship was a worthwhile experience which will help you achieve your career goals?

Overall do you feel that doing this international internship was a worthwhile experience which will help you achieve your career goals?

Absolutely! Not only from the internship but outside of that as well. In the States, I became a fundraising chair for Engineers Without Borders. A lot of my interactions here were with people from within poor communities and making those connections through Bridging Gaps, such as meeting MC, who does so much for his community, was amazing. I’ll be working towards doing fundraising for his work and others in the Cape Town area.

Do you feel that you were given the opportunity to make a valuable contribution to your local host organisation?

Do you feel that you were given the opportunity to make a valuable contribution to your local host organisation?

Yes very much so! The lab really needed an engineer and I was there exactly when they needed one!

Overall do you feel that doing this international internship was a worthwhile experience which will help you achieve your career goals?

What were your reasons for wanting to come to Cape Town to do an internship?

I wasn’t actually originally looking for an internship in Cape Town specifically. I was looking to visit a country that was a little different, obscure or a little unorthodox. I was looking to go somewhere, where I could learn through their way of learning, and not so much through the typical western way of doing things. Cape Town definitely ticked off a lot of the boxes.

Overall do you feel that doing this international internship was a worthwhile experience which will help you achieve your career goals?

Did you receive sufficient levels of supervision and guidance from your colleagues at your host organisation?

I never received a lot of direction when I started in the hospital. Once I moved into the lab, I got more direction from my supervisor and got to work with many other students and people who were all doing research.

Overall do you feel that doing this international internship was a worthwhile experience which will help you achieve your career goals?

Were you given adequate responsibilities during your internship?

Yes, Definitely!

Brittany's Experience of Cape Town

What fears did you have before coming to Cape Town with Bridging Gaps?

What fears did you have before coming to Cape Town with Bridging Gaps?

Safety. Not much else! My parents were quite scared too.

What do you think about those fears now?

What do you think about those fears now?

There are situations that can put you on edge, like when you’re walking around and there are people coming up to you asking for things or touching you. But for the most part, I wasn’t ever really scared. I am definitely not as afraid as I was when I first got here. Being here has taught me that it’s not as bad in Cape Town as you may think or hear about.

After spending some time in the city, what is your impression of Cape Town?

I Love it! It’s beautiful. It’s crazy seeing mountains next to the ocean, and it’s all so accessible. It’s really beautiful and I want to come back!
