Miranda's Cape Town Internship Review

NGO, Human Rights  Internship In Cape Town, 2018

Yes as soon as I showed my interest in coming, Lucie was very helpful and always got back to me very quickly. I felt like I could ask her whatever I wanted, and I’d get a response. Her information was always very accurate. Yeah there was good communication, and you were always there for support and advice so it was great.

"The best summer ever!"

Miranda's Review from Go Abroad | August 26, 2018

Bridging Gaps were a great provider, the team in Cape Town were lovely- so friendly and helpful!

Whilst I was there I came into personal difficulties and the team was so supportive, making sure I was well looked after and had everything I needed. The continuous support via text and email, really reassured me that I could count on them whenever I needed.

The internship was really rewarding and once I got stuck in with my own project I started to really enjoy my time there. My colleagues at Regency Global were amazing and always ready to give me advice and support. The internship was open to me deciding what I wanted to do while I was there. Although, at first I didn’t have much to do, once I started to understand the way everything operated and the opportunities available it was easier to make an impact. Being involved in the organization’s amazing projects has really inspired me to pursue a career working at an NGO and explore development work in Africa further.

The social activities that Bridging Gaps put on were always well organized and really varied, showing the best of what Cape Town had to offer.

I would highly recommend using Bridging Gaps to anyone who wants to get work experience in Cape Town whilst having a great time exploring and meeting new people.

internship placement experience

NGO, Human Rights Internship Placement Experience

What type of internship experience were you initially looking for?

What type of internship experience were you initially looking for?

I was initially looking for a volunteer program where I could give back to the community and make a positive difference. I wanted to work with people who were friendly and whom I enjoyed spending time with and I wanted to do something new and test the limits of what I’m capable of.

How did your actual internship placement compare to your ideal internship experience?

How did your actual internship placement compare to your ideal internship experience?

My placement was more office based than I thought it was going to be because I initially thought I’d be volunteering, but I did do more practical things in the office. Like it was more operations based than I thought it would be, but I also learnt a lot about office culture and about the charity sector in a developing country. So, it was worthwhile.

Did taking part in your internship challenge you and help develop your skills?

Did taking part in your internship challenge you and help develop your skills?

Yes, I think it helped me be more time efficient and manage my time better in a pressured environment. I also did a lot of research work, so that was useful. I think that this is something I would like to pursue further.

Overall do you feel that doing this international internship was a worthwhile experience which will help you achieve your career goals?

Overall do you feel that doing this international internship was a worthwhile experience which will help you achieve your career goals?

Yes I think it will, because I’ve also gained work experience abroad and that’s really significant. South Africa is a country where development work is crucial and the charity I interned for is very relevant to the problems South Africa faces today- They address the problems of HIV/AIDS. I definitely think the experience I gained will help me do further work in the charity sector.

Do you feel that you were given the opportunity to make a valuable contribution to your local host organisation?

Do you feel that you were given the opportunity to make a valuable contribution to your local host organisation?

Yes! They gave me a lot of opportunities to help and take parts in projects. They really took me on board and made me a part of their team. I helped develop a syllabus in agriculture for my internship organisation and they are going to pursue that further. So, I do feel like I have left my mark in a sense.

Overall do you feel that doing this international internship was a worthwhile experience which will help you achieve your career goals?

Did you receive sufficient levels of supervision and guidance from your colleagues at your host organisation?

Yes, they gave me a lot of support and whenever I had a question they were happy to help. It wasn’t like they were grudging in anyway. They always wanted to give me opportunities- the boss always wanted me to be involved as much as possible so I felt like it was very inclusive there.

Overall do you feel that doing this international internship was a worthwhile experience which will help you achieve your career goals?

Were you given adequate responsibilities during your internship?

I felt like at the beginning it was slightly mixed, but then as time went on I had more to do and had a lot more responsibility. I was given my own project to work on which was great.

Overall do you feel that doing this international internship was a worthwhile experience which will help you achieve your career goals?

What were your reasons for wanting to come to Cape Town to do an internship?

I think my primary reason was to come to Cape Town more than to come for an internship. I initially wanted to experience Cape Town and do volunteering, so the fact that I did an internship was a bonus. Basically, I wanted to work in the charity sector and have a great time.

Yeah it was great. It was nice to have that orientation when I first came and meet the team. I just felt if I ever needed something then I could ask for it. It really helped me feel safe here!

Cape Town experience

Miranda's Experience of Cape Town

What fears did you have before coming to Cape Town with Bridging Gaps?

What fears did you have before coming to Cape Town with Bridging Gaps?

My main fears were safety and the water crisis.

What do you think about those fears now?

What do you think about those fears now?

It never affected me that much. Maybe the safety, like petty crimes, but it just gave me insight as to what life’s like. It didn’t really hinder me that much. I don’t have the same fears I had, I’m more aware now of what life’s like. Now that I’m here I realize you just have to get on with it when things get tough.
