"Unforgettable experience"

Monil's Review from Go Abroad | September 11, 2018

I did an 8-week internship at Pargo, a logistics company based in Cape Town. I really enjoyed my internship and learnt a lot about how businesses operate and look to grow and develop. I met a lot of really nice people, all of whom were always willing to help and really enhanced my internship to help me get as much out of it as possible.

The team at Bridging Gaps were amazing, they were always available to help us in any way possible, no matter what time of day it was. They also organised a lot of really fun socials, ranging from group dinners to trips to Boulders beach. Bridging Gaps were amazing even before I reached South Africa, addressing all my concerns in a very timely manner and making the organisation for my trip as simple as possible.

internship placement experience

Business, Administration & Logistics Internship Placement Experience

What type of internship experience were you initially looking for?

What type of internship experience were you initially looking for?

One where I got proper responsibility. I’ve done work in the past but it was very much more observational and shadowing. So I was looking for something more hands on.

How did your actual internship placement compare to your ideal internship experience?

How did your actual internship placement compare to your ideal internship experience?

Yeah it was pretty much what I was looking for! I got to get an overall picture of the different roles involved in the business which was great.

Overall do you feel that doing this international internship was a worthwhile experience which will help you achieve your career goals?

Overall do you feel that doing this international internship was a worthwhile experience which will help you achieve your career goals?

Yes, especially in South Africa where the work environment is very different. It was nice to see that offices around the world don’t all work the same way, and that there are many other ways of doing things. It’s great because if I start my own business one day I can incorporate different ways of doing things into my business- things I have learned here during my internship.

Do you feel that you were given the opportunity to make a valuable contribution to your local host organisation?

Do you feel that you were given the opportunity to make a valuable contribution to your local host organisation?

Yes, a lot of the time the projects I did didn’t seem important, but after I was done I could definitely see what I did helped the team.

Overall do you feel that doing this international internship was a worthwhile experience which will help you achieve your career goals?

What were your reasons for wanting to come to Cape Town to do an internship?

I guess I’ve always had Cape Town high on my list of places to go, and when I saw an internship program available in Cape Town I thought it was the perfect opporunity!

Overall do you feel that doing this international internship was a worthwhile experience which will help you achieve your career goals?

Did you receive sufficient levels of supervision and guidance from your colleagues at your host organisation?

Yes, it was a good balance. I never got spoon fed, I was quite independent, but whenever I needed help or had questions they were more than happy to answer.

Overall do you feel that doing this international internship was a worthwhile experience which will help you achieve your career goals?

Were you given adequate responsibilities during your internship?

I think so yes, a lot of the work I was doing was stuff I had never done before. I wanted to see what its like to run a business.

Even if it seems like a lot of money at the time, the experience you get, and the memories you get to take home and the friends you make really makes it worth it!

Cape Town experience

Monil's Experience of Cape Town

What fears did you have before coming to Cape Town with Bridging Gaps?

What fears did you have before coming to Cape Town with Bridging Gaps?

Cape Town has a reputation for being unsafe, so I was scared of that. This has also been the longest I’ve been away from home. I was also worried I wouldn’t make friends while I was here.

What do you think about those fears now?

What do you think about those fears now?

In hind sight I was probably a little naive. I never really felt unsafe in Cape Town. It actually just felt a lot like university!

After spending some time in the city, what is your impression of Cape Town?

Would you recommend Cape Town as a worthwhile and enjoyable place to visit?

Yes definitely! Its been the best couple of months of my life!!

Yes I think what I was asking for, for my internship, was very random and unique, and Lucie really smashed it out the park and got me exactly what I wanted!
