Placement & Programme
What were your reasons for wanting to complete a Law & Policy internship programme in South Africa?

I have family in South Africa and all over Africa but I have never been. I wanted to challenge myself by travelling alone, but I also wanted to experience the continent. I was able to spend time with family and will definitely be back. I’d love to work here in the future!

What kind of internship experience were you initially looking for?

I am studying international law and was looking for an internship that I could use for academic credit. I also wanted to experience a new country and work in an organization that does practical meaningful human rights work.

How did your actual internship placement compare to your ideal internship experience? ?

My host organisation had an amazing culture and it makes me want to live and work in South Africa. In the UK everything is so serious, but here we do serious work and everyone is so happy and smiling. Everyone really cares about each other and is willing to help the next person. There’s also flexibility to plan your workday the way you want, which I appreciated. I loved the South African culture, everyone is so laid back and really nice here. This far exceeded my expectations!

Did you receive sufficient levels of supervision and guidance from your colleagues at your host organisation?

I loved my host organisation! Everyone was so nice to me and always helpful. All the lawyers know so much and are willing to sit down and explain anything to you. I had such great mentors. The work they do is so important. They allowed me to get income in so many areas from research to supporting cases, going into communities to see clients and more.

Were you given adequate responsibilities during your internship?

Did taking part in your internship challenge you and help develop your skills?

Do you feel that you were given the opportunity to make a valuable contribution to your local host organisation?

What fears did you have before coming to with Bridging Gaps?

What do you think about those fears now?

After spending some time in the city, what is your impression of Cape Town?

I loved it! I plan to come back for longer. There are so many things to do and I must return to experience everything Cape Town offers. I would love to live here!

Would you recommend Cape Town as a worthwhile and enjoyable place to visit?

Yes! I had a massive list of things I wanted to do in Cape Town. My favourite thing was going zip lining, it was so much fun! I’ve done so many things I’ve never done in my life. I feel like I’ve conquered fear on this trip and am stronger than when I first arrived. Every activity I did I’d ask why am I doing this. Then after I did it I was so proud of myself. I did some hikes, which were beautiful! I went to many nice restaurants, and there are so many cool things to do in Cape Town. Every person I spoke to gave me more ideas of fun things to do. I have to come back!
