Placement & Programme
What were your reasons for wanting to complete a Journalism internship programme in South Africa?

Because I wanted to travel to somewhere with sunshine, nice weather, and somewhere that has good internship opportunities, especially in journalism.

What kind of internship experience were you initially looking for?

Something professional in journalism

How did your actual internship placement compare to your ideal internship experience? ?

I loved my internship, it was so good. All my colleagues were so nice and I could ask them anything I wanted. I also learnt a lot of editing skills which is great. Everyone I worked with was so skillful.

Did you receive sufficient levels of supervision and guidance from your colleagues at your host organisation?

They did train me yes, but I also had a lot of basic skills already. We worked well together and I developed skills in editing. I learnt a lot because their thoughts were really different from mine; they came from different backgrounds so I learnt from everyone’s different perspectives. I also learnt a lot from other interns there- they helped me when I couldn’t understand certain things. I also made very good friends with the other interns.

Were you given adequate responsibilities during your internship?

Yes definitely. I edited four videos over my four week internship and they were all shown on their TV channel; 2 news and 2 promotion videos. They needed my help which was great and I was able to use my skills.

Did taking part in your internship challenge you and help develop your skills?

Yes definitely my editing skills and also my English. English is not my first language so I learnt a lot and was able to practise. They couldn’t speak Chinese to me so I had to improve my English!

Do you feel that you were given the opportunity to make a valuable contribution to your local host organisation?

Overall, was this international internship a worthwhile experience that will help you achieve your career goals?

Location
What fears did you have before coming to with Bridging Gaps?

I was worried about safety. You know, it is South Africa so I was thinking about my safety but as a journalist I think I need to try and go to as many places as possible and I actually don’t think it is unsafe here. I have felt really safe and sound here and you have helped me with that. The first day, in the orientation, you gave me so much advice and information and although I was nervous at the beginning, I realised after a while it is fine to go out by myself and I have not felt unsafe at all. I have felt comfortable and now I feel like I am a local!

What do you think about those fears now?

After spending some time in the city, what is your impression of Cape Town?

I have loved Cape Town especially because the people here are all really nice! My co-workers, all the staff in restaurants, they’re all so friendly. They always smile at me and ask how I am, it is not like that in China! I have also done so much here, new things and new people.

Would you recommend Cape Town as a worthwhile and enjoyable place to visit?

Service & Support
Did Bridging Gaps help you prepare for your trip sufficiently? E.g. placement search, communications, mentoring?

Yes definitely! All the things you sent me before I came were really really helpful. You gave me some Apps to download which I have used all the time, and also GPS and all the things there is to do here. Also every time I asked you what to do or where to go you gave me a lot of information and feedback which was really great.

How was your experience of Bridging Gaps while you were on the ground in ?

I am really happy with how you helped me. You cared so much and you messaged me back every day, no matter what time it was. You really helped me a lot and I am really grateful for that. You did so much for me while I was here.

What was the best feature of the Bridging Gaps Concierge internship programme?

Would you recommend pursuing a Journalism internship programme in Cape Town with us to others?

Yes absolutely! Anyone from Sheffield or China, anyone who wants to do an internship I will say, ‘Oh go to Cape Town, I will give you a website, go with Bridging Gaps! I will show you videos and pictures so you can see how amazing it is!’

In what ways could our internship programmes be improved?

Before you applied, how did you feel about the programme fees?

Having completed your placement and had the experiences you've have, what do you think about the fees now?

What would you say to someone that is considering an internship here but is concerned about the fees?

Anything else you would like to add?

Bridging Gaps has many more established competitors, why did you choose us over them?

I didn’t look at anyone else, you were the first person I spoke to. I was thinking that because you are a young and small company you would care about me a lot. The other companies have too many interns to care about them each, and that is the opposite of Bridging Gaps. You care about each intern so much and that is why I choose you. I am so glad I did! I also chose you because of your website- I really love it! The detail, the information, it is so clear and easy to use.
