The best education and teaching internships in Cape Town?

We think so. We pride ourselves on delivering customised internship placements and on the ground support that offer life-changing, valuable professional experiences.

Our customised internship programme is designed to help prepare aspiring teachers for their future in education. Pursuing a teaching internship will not only equip you with valuable classroom experience, but it provides you with the opportunity to work alongside experienced teachers who act as your mentors.

All the schools and care facilities we collaborate with in Cape Town benefit hugely from the assistance of classroom assistants, and although the general lack of resources provides a challenging work environment, we are sure you will have an unforgettably rewarding experience!  As an intern you will have the opportunity to see how a school in a developing country operates, as well as learning how to maintain classroom discipline.

We also offer a variety of education internships in a range of inspiring local NGO’s focused on equal access to education, education policy and the general development of the education system in South Africa.  As an education intern, your experience of a successful education culture, as well as your fresh perspective and ideas, can make a valuable contribution to the improvement of the education system in South Africa.

As well as gaining a better understanding of education on an international scale, you will also get to interact with some incredible local teachers, mentors, trainers and children, who will be extremely excited by your presence!  Whilst gaining valuable work experience in the field of education and policy, this is your chance to make a difference in the lives of children who need it the most.

Key Skills Developed Through Our Education & Teaching Internship

Verbal communication

Some of the most crucial skills needed in teaching and education based jobs are related to communication. Teachers are required to adapt their communication style to the individual needs of students, whilst being able to communicate clearly and professionally with parents and colleagues. Throughout the internship interns will gain practice in effectively speaking with a variety of students. They will learn how to communicate material in an accessible and meaningful way so that the whole classroom is engaged.

Time management

Interns will learn to juggle a number of tasks at one time whilst working to tight deadlines. These tasks could include assisting with delivering a lesson, marking work, solving student issues, attending meetings and preparing lesson plans.

Written communication

Interns will hone their writing skills by delivering clear and grammatically correct information to students during lessons. They may also be required to communicate via email with colleagues.

Subject and age specific technical skills

Interns will develop their subject and age specific knowledge depending on the grade of the children they are teaching. Interns will be required to fully understand the material they teach and explain it in a thorough and clear way.

Critical thinking

Interns will gain practice in answering challenging questions from students and solving conflicts between them. Interns may also be required to revise lesson plans depending on individual student’s needs.

Creating assignments and tests

Interns will be required to assist with creating engaging and challenging assignments and tests for a range of students. They will also gain experience in marking and correcting student’s work.

Classroom management

Interns will learn a variety of classroom management techniques from the experienced teachers they assist.

Education & Teaching Internships Frequently Asked Questions

What aged children will I be teaching?

This very much depends on your personal interests and goals, as well as your existing experience.  We collaborate with a wide range of local schools that offer internship opportunities in all grades.  During your internship you could act as a teaching assistant in more than one classroom and gain experience working with children of all ages.

Can I work at more than one organisation or school during my time in Cape Town?

Usually we limit our placement search to one organisation for you because it is more beneficial to yourself and the organisation if you only commit to one place.  We find that the longer our participants stay at their placement, the more they learn and gain from the experience.  However, if you are planning on staying in Cape Town for over 6 months, then we can explore more than one option for you.  Also, we can facilitate weekend volunteering opportunities for anyone who is interested.

Do I need to have previous teaching experience to do this internship?

No it is not a requirement that you have any previous teaching experience but it is beneficial if you have some experience working with children.  The schools we collaborate with are more likely to offer you an internship opportunity if you have some experience in au pairing, sports coaching, camp leadership or any other similar position.
